A Shitty Mothers Day Revelation

For a week now Tracey and I have been quietly fuming at each other, and today, of all days, it came to a surprising head.
“Notice anything odd?” Tracey asked me as Miss3 ran to join her siblings. There’s always something odd to notice at our house, but in this instance I thought I knew what she meant…
I was sitting at work today eating my lunch out of one of the kids’ pink lunch boxes. It was all a little exciting, especially as we’d run out of cling wrap so it was all individually wrapped in alfoil meaning the whole thing was kind of spaceman themed.
Kids inevitably need to go the moment you’re lined up at a supermarket checkout or the bride is walking down the aisle or the waitress is bringing dinner to the table.
“Huggles?” Miss3 asked me tonight from the doorway, arms wide apart in anticipation.
I was once again struck dumb by the fact I had a part, however brief, in creating something so cute.
Tracey had just called out Miss3 in her Mommy voice. The bedroom was a mess. Clothes had been dragged out of the wardrobe and toys pulled out of boxes. Actually, the room was a supermess.
It’s like we’ve never done cold weather before in this house.
We have three kids staying home today with colds. Last night the chorus of coughs was so constant I’d wake up if there were a few seconds of silence.
I’d spent a couple of minutes in a sort of loop – staring at the empty phone cradle, checking the kitchen benches, walking through the lounge and bedrooms and then back to the cradle. The phone was nowhere to be seen.
“I’ll get it!” is a chorus which reverberates off the walls of our house whenever the phone rings. Followed, since there is only one phone, by the jostling and squabbling and calls of, “It’s MY turn!!”
When it comes to entertaining the kids, Tracey and I have similar approaches but our methods differ ever so slightly. She likes to get them building a sheet cubby house or making things. I like to turn on the telly.
Another little glimpse into my fairy tale life.
An important part of kids development, role playing is also a great way to see what’s going on in your kid’s head. If you dare…
