In Hot Water
by“If you all get ready quickly I’ll give you some money for a hot chocolate at school,” I told my kids this morning by way of encouragement to get them moving. Mistake. Big mistake.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I have a morning routine and if I deviate from it things tend to go belly up.
Sometimes I’m glad we’ve got a house full of girls and only two boys who are 13 years apart in age. Friends sometimes help us to make this realization.
I lay shirtless on the table. Both doctors were fairly buff in much the same way I’m not, but rather than feel inadequate I reminded myself this body has produced seven children, so of course it’s looking less than pristine.
Lots of smiles in the house because Grandma and Grandad are home again, with Grandma flying in from Cairns this weekend and my dad and brother meeting her at the airport.
My nephew had been moping around the house all night. His shoulders were slumped and he could barely lift his eyes off the floor. Something was clearly on his mind.
It seems we all have our ‘the time I fell down’ story. Which is great, because I don’t feel so singled out.
“I understand how you feel,” my lovely cousin, Donna, sympathized with me last night when the topic turned to my recent fall.
When I was at school I was an athlete. Seriously. I rowed. I played football. I ran – everywhere! I’d finish a lap of the oval so far ahead of my team mates my coach would make me do it again.
So what is going on with me lately?
Tracey wants the matching purse to the handbag she bought last week. We’d been ‘discussing’ it ever since and, as usual, I was losing.
This started out as a lovely salad in a cafe on a child free date a couple of years ago.
“This tastes great,” said Tracey.
I had a look at her meal and a small taste. “I could make that,” I said.
And I have been ever since.
I don’t understand a lot of what goes on at home, I just do what I’m told. Sometimes I think Tracey keeps me in the dark on purpose so she can be in charge. I’m okay with that.
Sleeping on concrete in the middle of town in middle of winter with nothing in my middle is not my idea of a great start to the weekend. But, to raise money to help the homeless, I’d agreed to do it. In a onesie.
Tomorrow night I’m sleeping with all the girls from work. And if that doesn’t get you clicking on the link to read this post, I don’t know what will.
Tracey has been ‘a bit tired’ now for going on 10 years. I’ve always assumed it was the kids. Now I’m not so sure.
