Knock Knock

Knock! Knock!

Someone was at the door. At 6am! On the bright side, it wasn’t our front door or even our bedroom door. In fact, I couldn’t even hear the knocks because, rather pleasingly, the rat-a-tat-tat was on Master24 and Charlotte’s bedroom door on the other side of the house.

On the downside, I think the biggest issue with having Master24 and his girlfriend living with us for a few months is going to be our children’s contraceptiveness.

Knock! Knock!

Apparently, Master24 and Charlotte both decided independently to not give a flying Frenchman who was at their bedroom door.

Knock! Knock!

Again, they feigned sleep. Each now hoping the other would wake up and answer the door.

Knock! Knock!

They both knew the other person was awake now and pretending to be asleep. So of course at this point, the fact someone is at the door is secondary to the battle of wills on the bed. Who will break cover? Who will make that move – a groan, a moan, a kick, a snort – which simply cannot be written off as still sleeping? Who will crack first?

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Clearly there is a genetic element to this parenting skill, because Master24 came out victorious and got to remain horizontal on the mattress podium, bathing in the warm glow of his own silent accolades.

Meanwhile, Charlotte had dragged herself towards the sound where she found Miss4 standing with her hand raised to tap yet again.

“What are you doing, sweetie?” Charlotte asked her.

Miss4 decided to answer that literally.

“I am knocking and asking if I can play with the kittens.”

The kittens, or teaser grandchildren as I think of them, were also housed in the bedroom with Master24 and Charlotte, albeit in a pet pen in the corner. They are new additions to their little household within our household. This home is fast becoming over-crowded. When they all leave in a month or two it’ll be the first time in history a three bedroom home housing seven people has felt roomy and spacious.

Even through the fog of sleep, something about what Miss4 just said didn’t quite make sense to Charlotte.

“You only knocked, sweetie,” said Charlotte. “You didn’t say anything.”

“Yes, I did,” Miss4 assured her. “But I knew you were asleep,” she said by way of explanation, “so I whispered.”

Four year old logic is a beautiful thing to have pointed at someone else.

I don’t know their names. Appa and Zuko, I think. Best to get the odd names out of the way before the grandkids arrive 😉

Here’s a lovely photo of Charlotte. After the zombie-one in my post the other day I thought I owed her this.
