Cleaning out the pantry

How frustrating is tidying up the pantry and finding expired goods which predate the last three cleanups? It means, of course, we’ve purchased expired goods from the supermarkets. Buggers!!!

Tracey borrowed books on decluttering and managing housework from the library this week and within two hours of arriving home the kitchen benches were full of cans and cereal and jars.

Sometimes it just takes a little nudge to get you started.

From a book called Home Sorted by Nina Rosace comes the advice to place things like rice, lollies, cereals, pasta, spices and flour etc in labeled containers. We were already doing this to a smaller extent, but not religiously and not with so much stuff.

Managing our time has always been a bit of a bugbear for this family. Tracey and I seem to be in perpetual motion between the kitchen, the lounge, the bathroom and the bedrooms, picking up cups and toys and bits of clothing. There never seems to be enough time to do it all and still relax, so sometimes the house goes to the dogs while we take a moment for ourselves. In the past we’ve discovered throwing things away helps because once, for example, a headless Barbie has left the premises it can’t reappear under foot in the hallway for you to trip on.

This works just as well for wheelless matchbox cars, stuffingless stuffed toys and coverless books, to name but a few.

Meanwhile, our pantry is looking neat, although somewhat sparse. It’s a good opportunity to eat our way through it now though, in anticipation of a big stock up sometime in the next couple of weeks.
