Banking On Our Kids

The staff where I work – we’re a great bunch of girls.

Every year, for the month of July, the BOQ branches around the country raise money for five of the country’s fabulous children’s hospitals in our Banking On Our Kids appeal. Our lovely manager, Jellina White, ordered us lunch to be delivered because the girls were feeling a little uncomfortable about hitting the streets in their costumes.

I wasn’t. Which was lucky because at lunch time I had to pick up my own father from his recent stay at the Gympie Hospital.

“Ah, you’re finally here. I’m looking forward to getting home and…” he started when he saw me.

“Oh, am I?” I said, feigning embarrassment. “When I called they said you’d ‘be leaving us soon’ and I thought you’d be needing the last rites read to you. Well, this is a nice surprise. I do feel a little overdressed now though.”

Today staff dressed up to raise awareness of our fundraising endeavours. We had to think back to when we were kids and dress as what we wanted to be when we grew up.

All I ever wanted to be was a dad, so I dressed up as a father.

And the more I thought about it, the better the idea seemed – I mean it’s a one day a week job. Right?

It was a good laugh and, as usual, our customers dug deep and we’re off to a brilliant start in our fundraising endeavours. Even better, the local rag, The Gympie Times, came and took our photo, so I’ll be in the paper again (the media tart in me is thrilled).

It’s provided a good laugh at home too.

When she saw a photo of me on Facebook, Miss6 had a question for her mum.

“Why is Daddy in a dress?”

“He’s a priest,” Tracey explained.

There was a pause.

“A girl Priest?”

So now Tracey’s taken to calling me the Victor Of Dibley.

This is a great cause, obviously, and all anyone has to do to help is throw a gold coin or two at the staff in your local BOQ branch. But softly, we don’t want bruises. Or you can click on the banner below which will take you to the BOQ website and you can donate online.

This is not a sponsored post 🙂 but it is a good cause.

When not typing away over here and checking his stats every two minutes Bruce Devereaux hangs out at his ‘BIG FAMILY little income’  Facebook Page.
