Australia’s Got Another Talent

“I’ve got to go,” I said to Tracey as I disconnected. “Mum needs me.”

“What’s happened?” asked Tracey, no doubt wondering if my Dad had fallen over again. It’s always the first thing on my mind as well when Mum calls.

“They can’t work out how to get their new garage remotes to work,” I said. “She wants me to come down and have a look.”

There was a rather disrespectful pause at this point.

“So she’s called on the biggest tool she could think of?” asked Tracey.

As much as it irks me to admit it, she had a point. I got excited this week when I worked out how to change the temperate setting in our new fridge.

“How hard can it be?” I scoffed.

Even as I said it I was thinking the answer was probably ‘too hard for me’. My self-image has no illusions.

“Your Mum reminds me of those mothers on Australia’s Got Talent who push their kid into the auditions,” Tracey said as I got dressed.

“Meaning?”

“Some parents are too supportive of their kid’s skills.” I waited. “And when the curtain comes up no one else in the country can understand why.”

Hilarious.

“You done?” I asked.

I’m sure she would have answered with something even cleverer but her mouth was busy guffawing.

I think she was finished. I don’t know for sure because I left.

After all, I didn’t want her to try say something else funny and end up choking on her brevity.
