The Favourite

As any parent worth their salt will tell you, it’s important not to take favourites with your children. Or, if you can’t help it, to at least not let them know.

And this holds true no matter how old your kids are.

“What are you doing there?” Tracey’s sister asked when Tracey picked up the phone at their parent’s place.

“It’s Sunday. We’re here for dinner, of course,” Tracey said. “Mum’s cooked a roast.”

This was met with a few seconds of silence as Tracey’s sister processed this information.

“Don’t they have you over for dinner every week?” asked Tracey. “Oh my god! I’m so sorry. I had no idea.”

This was met with a few more seconds of silence as Tracey’s sister processed this additional information.

“I guess I really am the favourite,” she said. “Or….I’m just messing with you! I’m just stealing food so Bruce can cook me biscuits.”

What she was doing was raiding their pantry because she’d returned late from a photo shoot and we needed some rolled oats so I could make some cookies for the kids’ lunch boxes tomorrow and hopefully have enough left to negotiate getting out of doing the dishes.

As anyone who reads my blog would know, Tracey loves a good burn. Also clear to anyone who reads my blog, usually I’m the one bathing in Aloe Vera.

But where does Tracey get this cheeky streak?

Well, the answer to that particular question became clear when a minute later Tracey’s dad walked behind Tracey as she was still chatting to her sister on the phone and called out:

“You start cutting up the roast, Bruce. I’ll get us another beer.”

It’s only the moustache let’s us tell them apart 😉
