The Big Bang Query

Isn’t it funny how your tastes and expectations change from when you’re a kid to when you grow up?

I remember when I was a kid, all I wanted was to be a famous singer, have a lightsaber and drive a car like James Bond, with lots of fancy gadgets.

“Dad,” my son said from his seat beside me. “Dad.”

We were watching The Big Bang Theory: an episode where Leonard was trying to suggest to his girlfriend, Stephanie, she stop living with him and instead they always end up in bed.

“Dad!”

“What!” I nearly yelled back, having been snapped out of my zombie-like staring at the tellysitter.

“Is it okay if I don’t have a girlfriend?” my boy asked, a little sheepishly.

I looked over at him, wondering where this was going: if maybe he was having trouble at school.

“Of course,” I said. “Sounds very sensible to me.”

There was a pause while we took in more of the show.

“Dad?”

“Yes, mate?” I was more attentive this time.

“Is it okay if I don’t have a girlfriend and adopt a kid instead?”

Okay, so not school.

“Yeah, that’s fine,” I answered him. “Why? You decided you don’t like girls?”

He smiled. “Naw. I just don’t like what they do.”

I asked him what he meant.

“You know,” he said, indicating the telly, “in bed. The s-e-x.”

I’m guessing he’s going to change his attitude towards girls sometime before university.

Or maybe not.

After all, I still want a car like James Bond.
